How much plastic do we use in Switzerland?

What do Switzerland's plastic material flows look like? This question was scientifically answered by the ETH in 2022. An easy-to-understand overview of plastic consumption and recycling has now been produced in collaboration with the authors. This is now available.

Plastic consumption is viewed critically around the world and various initiatives are aimed at reducing consumption and better recycling the plastics used. But which plastics are used in Switzerland? Which products contain plastics? Which plastics are recycled? A scientific study by Klotz and Haupt (2022 ) investigated all of these questions. The products made of 12 plastics were mapped in 54 usage segments - from PET bottles to insulation material and toys, all plastic consumption is included in the study. Furthermore, the entire value chain was mapped from production to use to recycling.

We have now edited this study and are making an easy-to-understand summary of the study available immediately. The plastic flows are first presented along the value chain. This is followed by more detailed information on the individual product segments.

Largest usage segment and most relevant types of plastic

At over 350,000 tons, the most plastic was used in the packaging sector in 2017, followed by buildings and construction with 225,000 tons of plastic used. The most commonly used types of plastic were polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE, 243,375 tons) and polypropylene (210,000 tons).

Recycling rate and use of recyclates

With a recycling rate of only 9%, little plastic is recycled in Switzerland. In addition to technical aspects, this is also due to the lack of infrastructure for collection, sorting and recycling. However, the use of recyclate would be important in order to save resources andCO2 emissions. An improvement requires cooperation along the entire value chain.
