For the Mattress Alliance, founded in 2021, various topics are being worked on to increase the circularity of mattresses in Switzerland:
Eco-Design
At the beginning of a sustainable circular economy is the design. Only suitable design can ensure that resource consumption is minimized, durability is given and an extension of the service life or unhesitating return to the cycle is guaranteed. In the Eco-Design subproject, various eco-design options for mattresses are therefore being investigated in collaboration with mattress producers.
Digital product passport
To simplify the recycling of mattresses, a digital product passport is to be introduced. The digital product passport enables the recycler to identify which materials are present in the mattress. Thus, the product passport enables better presorting and efficient processing. The requirements for the product passport are aligned with the European Bedding Association and efforts in the EU. Contents, format, etc. of the product passport will be discussed with the manufacturing companies and the recyclers.
Secondary products sales market
Successful recycling can only take place if the products from the recycling also have a meaningful use. For this purpose, sales markets and uses for the foams and textiles from mattress recycling are identified. The findings from the market investigations are then fed back into the eco-design project to determine the most suitable materials.
