The study aimed to demonstrate how waste collection in Switzerland should be structured in the future. Does Switzerland still have ecological and economic potential for further (separate) collections? If so, which specific products and packaging are involved, and how should these be prioritized? In accordance with the principle of eco-efficiency and impact efficiency, efforts should focus on areas where the greatest benefit for the environment can be generated through the deployment of appropriate resources. This interpretation aligns with the principles of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).
Considering ecological and economic factors, current technical developments, and international practices, the study examined the following key questions for the Swiss retail sector:
- Are there new opportunities for separate collection that are ecologically and economically viable?
- Are mixed or combined collections the future?
