Material consumption worldwide has quadrupled in the last 50 years - from 26.7 to over 100 billion tons per year. However, only around 7.2 % of this currently flows back into cycles (Global Circularity Gap Report 2023). At the same time, new regulations such as the PPWR (EU) or VerpV (CH, under consultation) are tightening requirements in the packaging sector: higher recycling rates, lower emissions and recyclable materials. For many companies, this means improving their choice of materials from an ecological perspective - without compromising on functionality or cost-effectiveness.
Bio-based materials offer great potential: obtained from renewable raw materials and by-products of the agricultural or food industry, they can reduce emissions and increase resource efficiency and are often biodegradable. Switzerland already offers numerous approaches - from compostable packaging in the retail sector to pilot projects for waste recycling and research into new recycling methods. However, the bridge between vision and implementation is often missing.
Our contribution: independent advice with vision
As an independent scientific consultancy with a focus on the circular economy and system design, we support companies in the development of sustainable strategies. We also support you with our expertise in the field of bio-based materials and answer key questions such as:
- What new (packaging) materials are available and how sustainable are they?
- What regulatory frameworks are coming our way?
- What are sensible options for closing the loop?
- How can innovative materials be developed to be recyclable?
Not every bio-based solution is automatically sustainable. A short lifespan, limited material performance or competition with food production harbor risks. Systemic issues such as integration into existing or the realization of new recycling streams are also still open. We help you to avoid pitfalls and fully exploit potential - for an ecologically and economically sensible use of bio-based materials.
Our range of services
- Support in material selection and design for circuits
- Potential analysis for bio-based alternatives (e.g. for packaging as part of the Quick Check)
- Life cycle assessment to estimate the environmental impact
- Evaluation of end-of-life solutions (composting, recycling, reuse)
- Advice on regulatory requirements
- Training and information events (e.g. 12th cycletalk - cycles for new materials)
Whether in the field of packaging, construction, consumer goods or textiles - we offer scientifically sound advice with a clear goal: to find and implement resource-saving and economically viable solutions. Our services are aimed at all parties planning to use innovative and bio-based materials - companies, start-ups, associations, funding institutions and educational and research institutions.
We support you in the development and evaluation of your projects - practical, independent and with an eye for the big picture.
