In a two-part workshop, we were able to familiarize employees from the sustainability department and the packaging specialists at this company with sustainable circular economy . Sustainable packaging development was the focus of this training course, which was specially developed for the company. Both parts lasted 3 hours each and were supplemented by group exercises and discussions.
Part 1: Sustainable circular economy
In the first part of the training, Dr. Melanie Haupt introduced the participants to the basics of the sustainable circular economy in the packaging sector. First, the most important terms were explained and the connection between circular solutions and sustainable solutions was discussed. After a theoretical input on circular economy strategies based on the 10 R strategies (from refuse to reuse, repair, remanufacturing, recycling and recovery), the participants had to become active themselves and develop initial strategies.
We then discussed drivers and barriers for recyclable products and packaging and presented business models for overcoming economic barriers.
Part 2: Sustainable packaging development
In the second part, Liane Jehle delved deeper into the topic of sustainable packaging development with the participants. She began by presenting various perspectives on the sustainability of packaging and discussed the importance of sustainability for packaging with the participants. Afterwards, sustainability strategies for specific examples were developed together, thus deepening the content. At the same time, a bridge was built between those responsible for sustainability and packaging specialists.
Finally, we addressed the topic of design-for-recycling guidelines. The participants learned about the most important guidelines and their main differences. The application was practiced using practical examples and the ecological impact was discussed.
