Cuenca, with a population of 615,000, is the third-largest city in Ecuador and faces significant challenges in the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE or e-waste). The aim of this project is to improve the management of e-waste from collection to recycling. This will be achieved by optimising the existing processes of the municipal waste management company EMAC-EP and expanding the existing collection point into a centre for e-waste management. The activities pursue a comprehensive approach encompassing the repair, refurbishment and recycling of electronic equipment. In collaboration with the University of Cuenca, the project also ensures accompanying training and sustainability assessment of the processes. In the medium term, the project results are intended to be implemented in other regions of Ecuador and Latin America.
