Packaging Optimization for Sportswear

Sports clothing in its sales packaging

The project aimed to sustainably optimize various cardboard packaging solutions for Odlo. Founded in 1946, the company is globally recognized for its outdoor apparel. In addition to supporting top athletes, Odlo also offers a wide range of products for the general public. Odlo is now facing new challenges, increasingly encountering the desire for less plastic, fewer packaging materials and more sustainable products. Based on the company's internal Corporate Carbon Footprint assessment, the most ecologically relevant packaging components are the outer packaging and cardboard boxes used for the sports underwear range.

As part of this project, we assessed the ecological sustainability (LCA) and circularity of the current product packaging. This involved analyzing the material composition and, for example, testing the solubility of the fibers in water. The final assessment of recyclability was based on European guidelines. Material decisions, such as those between plastic and cardboard, were based on life cycle assessments and the verification of system compatibility. This multi-faceted approach ensured that the optimizations were not only ecologically sound but also compatible with existing systems.
